10 Dog-Friendly Cafés on the Southern Gold Coast (A 2019 Guide)

Pristine beaches, a laidback lifestyle, fabulous weather – the Gold Coast is an amazing place to live. 

Have you recently made the decision to call the Gold Coast home? You’re not alone. More than 30,000 people packed up and moved to the Gold Coast over the last 2 years.

Perhaps you’ve just welcomed a furry little one to the family? Not only is the human population growing here on the Coast, but more and more families are choosing to adopt canine children. In fact, the total number of registered dogs now exceeds 60,000! 

That means a greater number of dog owners are hitting the beaches, parks and streets with their four-legged friends. 

With so many dog-friendly areas on the Gold Coast, your options are plentiful. But what about you? Perhaps you just want to relax somewhere comfy with a nice hot cuppa? 

Thanks to an increasing number of cafés popping up on the Coast, you don’t have to travel far. It’s easy to find a nice place to enjoy an aromatic coffee and tantalising homemade cake. 

But what about the tail-wagger? Leaving him at home isn’t an ideal option. So where can you go for a coffee with your dog on the south end of the Coast? Look no further. We’ve listed 10 dog-friendly cafés on the southern Gold Coast (A 2019 guide) so you can get your caffeine fix and spend quality time with your best mate.

1. Elephant Rock Café, Currumbin

After taking your pooch for a walk along picturesque Currumbin Beach, head up to Elephant Rock Café for a breather. Take in the eyepopping view and enjoy a beverage from the spacious and breezy terrace.

This historic café has been a regular hangout for locals and tourists for over 25 years. A café, restaurant and bar, it’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Elephant Rock Café proudly offers fresh healthy Modern Australian cuisine as well as coffee, freshly-squeezed juices and just-blended smoothies.

For those out later in the day, share a platter and enjoy a glass of wine as you watch the sun set and the full moon rise over the Pacific Ocean. 

Elephant Rock Café is dedicated to the community by doing their bit to help save the environment. They compost all organic matter and recycle used glass, cardboard and cans.

All dogs are welcome, however large dogs will be kindly asked to sit outside.  But with such a view – would you really want to sit inside?

2. The Deck Café, Currumbin

Located a stone’s throw from the beach, The Deck Café claims bragging rights to the finest Merlo espresso on the Coast. Also on offer are deliciously gratifying fresh meals and drool-worthy homemade sweets. Get in early to get them fresh from the oven.

The staff at The Deck Café just ask you to settle in on the deck and let them take care of the rest. Capitalise on warm, sunny days with your buddy in the spacious outdoor area.

3. Espresso Moto, Palm Beach & Coolangatta

Sporting a chilled atmosphere, this simple indoor café runs with a classic & vintage motorbike theme. 

Offering great value for money with moreish and generously-sized meals, Espresso Moto is also a favourite with the pooches. Good boys and girls are offered drinking water, and if they’re especially well behaved, they may even score a doggy treat.

At night, the Coolangatta location transforms into a gnoccheria! (But you may want to leave Rover at home for that one).

4. Barefoot Barista, Palm Beach

Begin your day near the breaking waves of Palm Beach at Barefoot Barista. One of our favourite dog-friendly cafes on the southern Gold Coast! A rustic and laid-back café, serving appetizing dishes that look like they belong in an art gallery. Inhale the full-bodied aroma from their artisan-roasted coffee, and try their fresh smoothies. 

You can sit inside this hip café, or outside under the shade with your best friend.

5. Dune Café, Palm Beach

Dune Café overlooks the picture-perfect Currumbin Lagoon. It’s also the most popular swimming spot for the southern Gold Coast’s woofers. The locals refer to this area as “doggy heaven”.

With stunning views, a chilled atmosphere, top-quality local produce and friendly staff, this is the perfect place to grab a cuppa and a snack after your pup has finished frolicking in the water.  

Dune Café hosts a generous variety of breakfast, lunch and takeaway options. 

On Saturdays spoil your taste buds and your ears. Sit back with your pooch and allow yourself to be treated to acoustic performances by talented local artists. Stay up-to-date with the schedule here.

6. Burleigh Co-Op, Burleigh Heads

Originally in its place was the popular café; Burleigh Social. However, following its unexpected closure in 2017, Burleigh’s own community banded together to create a café “By the people, for the people”.

Open for breakfast and lunch, Burleigh Co-Op focuses on serving locals with top-notch coffee and appetising seasonal meals.

Bask with your pooch outdoors in the sunshine or chill under an umbrella.

Their menu now proudly features macadamia cappuccinos – what are you waiting for?

7. Street Corner Espresso, Burleigh Heads

This family-run café serves mouthwatering dishes in a spacious and covered alfresco dining area that would make any dog feel at home. Visitors love the funky vibe, attentive staff and fantastic freshly ground coffee. 

Street Corner Espresso prides themselves on their smooth, rich coffee with deep chocolate notes. 

Can we also mention they have doggie ice cream? Be careful, your four-legged friend may never want to leave.

8. Hidden Perk, Burleigh Heads

This cosy, kid and dog-friendly café adds to a long list of quality cafés in Burleigh Heads.

Hidden Perk is a long-standing secret kept by locals. Hounds of all kinds love to hang in the sunny courtyard, while their mums and dads savour delicious pastries, healthy food options and flavourful coffee.

9. Lakeview Espresso, Burleigh Waters

A lively community hub, neighbours meet up at the Lakeview Café for a chat over a cup of brew in a chilled atmosphere. Sit in the spacious outdoor area with your pooch and spoil him with the doggie treats on offer. 

As for human diners, treat yourself to common café classics with a modern twist. Vegan and gluten-free sweets are also available.

Lakeview Café has given guests another reason to visit thanks to a new menu item: tiramisu pancakes… Check your drool and head on down!

10. Commune Café, Burleigh Heads

A lively café with a quirky vintage interior, Commune Café was created by a couple of locals who are passionate about protecting our environment. Their mission is to help make the Gold Coast a little bit greener day-by-day while focusing on the local community and supporting local artists.

Sit outside under a brolly with your pup and watch the world go by.

  1. Dune Cafe in our local. Owned by The RSL the money made is used for Veterans and their companion dogs. A statue to dogs at war, sits out side. The staff delightful, all pooches welcome here, after a swim in the lagoon.
